Cross-curricular Project
Description:
One key goal of this project is to encourage teachers to share data across disciplines to encourage further data-driven instruction on the school-wide level. The Renaissance and Baroque Festival and the Cross-curricular Committee both work toward this end: They encourage teachers to communicate with each other and look for commonalities among disciplines. The Cross-curricular Committee is exploring ways that an alignment of the American Literature and U.S. History curricula could benefit students and teachers. Such a correlation would lead to clearer standards, greater communication, and increased likelihood of data-driven instruction.
Faculty Involvement:
LaGuardia teachers recognize the value of interweaving arts and academics in our dual-mission school. Some examples follow:
Mr. Sudduth and Ms. Baskerville explained at a faculty conference how they interweave disciplines.
In interviews with LaGuardia students, teachers shared the following thoughts:
Dr. Washington said, "LaGuardia is unique in giving the arts equal footing with the academics...It takes as much time and effort to train a concert violinist as it does to train a neurosurgeon."
Dr. Washington said, "There was a time a particularly motivated Beginning Strings class developed so fast that they were able to put on a really respectable performance by the end of their first year...We finished so early in the semester that I had time to teach units on non-Western music."
Mr. Turner said, "The best of what we have to offer at LaGuardia is our wonderful arts programs (dance, art, drama, etc.), and they are what make us one of the leading schools in the nation; our arts programs combined with the finest academic training is what makes us unique."
Mr. Turner said, "Performing in West Side Story and Rising Stars has been, by far, the best experience I have had as a teacher. To have students come to me and ask for me to appear in their showcase was truly an honor."
Curricular Alignment Team:
Team Goal: Laying the groundwork for Curricular Alignment under the new approach of integrating literacy as state in the New Common Core State Standards
Project:
Finalizing a curriculum map for these two courses to reflect the three main characteristics of the new Common Core State Standards:
- Its interdisciplinary approach to literacy
- Its focus on reading complex original text including non-fictional text
- Its focus on results rather than means
